EU Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.
